About ARCU-SUL
The Mercosur and Associated States Regional Accreditation System for Undergraduate Courses (Arcu-Sul) is a permanent mechanism for regional accreditation of the Mercosur Educational Sector. Its objective is to give public assurance, in the Mercosur region and associated states, of the academic and scientific quality levels of the courses. The participating countries are Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
Accreditation follows regional criteria prepared by advisory commissions, under the coordination of the Network of National Accreditation Agencies (Rana). This mechanism respects national laws, and adherence by higher education institutions is voluntary.
Inep is responsible for running Arcu-Sul in Brazil and is responsible for executing the national assessment system for higher education institutions and undergraduate courses. The institute's actions produce indicators and an information system that subsidizes both the regulation process, exercised by the Ministry of Education, and guarantees transparency of data on the quality of higher education to society as a whole.
The accreditation process is continuous, with periodic calls. So far, the following titles have participated: agronomy, architecture, nursing, engineering, veterinary, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, geology and economics. Students trained in accredited courses have the prerogative of simplified procedures (documentary) for revalidation of the diploma in the countries participating in the system.
Arcu-Sul has a bank of evaluators specifically trained to work in the system: the International Bank of Peers Evaluators (Bipe). There are about a thousand specialists registered on the bank's electronic platform.
The system seeks permanent improvement in people's training, with the quality standards required to promote economic, social, political and cultural development. Likewise, it aims at consolidating a knowledge society and a regional scientific community, focused on the constitution of a world of equality and peace, in which responsibility, the defense of human rights, the environment and solidary cooperation prevail. .
